Obituary of Martin Parent

It is with deep sadness that the family of Martin Parent announce his passing on August 2, 2021 in Calgary, AB. Born on Feb. 10, 1944 in Sainte-Françoise, QC, Martin was the 4th child of Léo Parent and Léda Bérubé.

At a young age Martin bravely left home and headed west with friends in search of work and opportunity. Originally only speaking French, he secured work in Hinton, AB where he learned to speak English, gain work experience and start valuable friendships. He later moved to Quesnel, BC eventually becoming an owner-operator of logging trucks.

Aside from being an extremely hard worker, Martin enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved to dance, tell jokes, play cards and board games, but above all he loved to laugh (and make others laugh). He was a true outdoors-man enjoying snowmobiling, four wheeling and camping. He loved all of his family and made regular trips back home to Quebec and Ontario to visit, and always called to stay connected.

Due to declining health, Martin moved to Calgary in 2018 to be closer to his daughter Monique. Despite his many health challenges, he kept his happy personality and was loved by the care home staff. Martin was proud of his children and their many accomplishments. He loved being Papa to his grandchildren, and his face would light up whenever he saw them.

Martin will be missed dearly by his children, Steve, Marcel (Amanda) and their children Marcus and Landon, Joanne (Phil) and their children Joshua and Eve, all in Ontario, Monique, Calgary, AB. Step children Robert (Stacey) Gilbert, Geraldine (Greg) Rye and their families, Quesnel, BC. Brothers, Fernand and Patrice, sisters, Céline, Simone, Gisèle, Lorette, and Jacqueline, all in Quebec. He also left an imprint on many hearts who will remember him fondly.

Martin was predeceased by his parents and his wife Betty Jo Gilbert.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday September 18 from 1:30-3:30 pm at the Quesnel Legion.
