Obituary of Daisy Lilian Tingley

In loving memory of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother.

Daisy Lynne Tingley (Gran)

Daisy Lynne Tingley was borne in Aldershot England in 1919. To a growing family of 7, with 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Gran was the last surviving member of her family.

Gran grew up during the war years, surviving the hardship and challenges of war, working at the Farnborough airdrome as a drafts person.

Gran immigrated as a war bride to Canada in March 1945, with her young son Tig on the ship HMS Franconia. Arriving at Halifax several weeks later.  Crossing Canada by train to Vancouver and then north to Quesnel. Living to 102 years old Gran was one of the last surviving war brides from the Second World War.

We would like to play tribute to our mother’s courage and ability to adapt to the changes in her life. From arriving alone in Canada with a toddler from a wartime England, to a new home, a new life and all the changes and adventures she encompassed in her life in Quesnel and the Cariboo. Always proud of her little town.

To a full long life, creating a diverse family, becoming a very proud Canadian. A true Caribouite. Mom was tough, kind, and determined. Always up for a good verbal brawl.  

Gran was a true matriarch. She was loved by her family, her friends and neighbours, and had the rare gift of treating all God’s creatures with the same kindness and respect, regardless of who they were or whatever their lot in life.

The journey of her life was a long one. One hundred plus years of an elegant walk through this world. She touched a myriad of people along the way. Always with a smile and a kind word. This is not to say she wasn’t quick with a comment or a quiet rebuke, but you knew you deserved it, and if Gran had something to say, you listened and fully understood you had it coming.

If it was possible to define our granny in a couple of words, they would be grace and character. Two virtues that seemed to be borrowed from another era, and yet in her, they were as real and timeless as her lovely smile and infectious wit.

Gran wore many hats in her full life, managing hotels, a laundromat, and the candy store.  A favorite passion was teaching kindergarten, always a love for those small children.

Later in life Gran enjoyed the writers group, being published several times in readers digest. We still have a good collection of poems and stories. Which are a special treat to read today.

In her wonderfully long life Gran touched and charmed many people, creating many memories for us to keep. Some of our favorite memories of Gran are of her and Gloria joining in on the festivities on a summer evening around the fire pit by the creek. The wit and charm of these wonderful ladies, so much fun and they made the laughter a little louder.

Gran had the ability to let you know you were loved, even as she was giving you a tune up, this was fortunate as it was not uncommon to catch hell from Gran.

After a life of one hundred and two years, Gran has left a lasting legacy with our family. Four sons; Tig / Robin /Dean / Pat and their partners and families.  10 grandkids, 21 great grandkids and 7 great-great grandkids. Well done Gran.

You will be forever loved and never forgotten.
