Obituary of Nettie Geofroy

Nettie Geofroy passed away peacefully at the age of 94. She was so strong, she survived cancer 25 years ago, but it had come back and eventually took her in her 95^th year. Nettie wasn’t only strong, she was also caring, considerate and wise.  Much of those traits she acquired from her upbringing. Nettie was born near Semens, Saskatchewan to Alice May.  When she was 3, her mom married Roy Johnson and moved to her homestead near Weeks.  Soon came four siblings. Most of her days in the 30’s and 40’s was spent being the big sister, tending to the farm and attending Neely Lake School.  She had met Paul Geofroy at that school and in 1954 Nettie moved to Prince George and married Paul in 1955.  They moved 7 times in one year and settled in Quesnel. Over the years, Paul and Nettie turned a two-room shack into a house to fit themselves and their 5 children.  She lived in that home for 53 years.

In the late 1950’s she joined the Women’s Institute, and 50 years later was awarded with a lifetime membership. She also became a volunteer member of the Fraser Village Society and stayed with the organization for 40 years.  As well as volunteering in the organizations promoting the establishment of the Dunrovin Park Lodge in the late 60’s to 70’s.  Thanks to her long-standing volunteer work, Nettie was nominated for Quesnel Citizen of the year in 1999.

Nettie’s work outside the home included tree planting and a school district custodian.  Where she became active in the union and studied to become a Certified Labour Counsellor in 1991 until she retired in 1994.

In retirement she enjoyed volunteering and playing the bells with the Quesnel Bell Ringers.  All the while tending to her family and a large garden where she became known as the carrot grandma.  She made life long friendships in every activity she did and she will be missed by many.

She is lovingly remembered and survived by her brothers Jim Johnson (Jessie) and Ken Johnson (Marnie), Sister-In-Law Ada Johnson, Sister Ida Boschman, her two daughters Yvonne Mottishaw (Jim), and Fran Poulin (Rick) and three sons Joe (Angela Butterworth), Bert (Michele), and Ken (Betty Tian) also her grandchildren Shane, Megan, Sheena, Dustin, Alicia, and Lucas along with her three great-grandchildren Zad, Verity and Louisa.

Nettie was predeceased by her husband Paul, her bother Edward Johnson and brother-in-law Herb Boschman.

A service was held on September 9^th at Clayton’s Funeral Directors. Her family so appreciated all who attended to celebrate her life.
