Obituary of Susan Mary Maile
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Susan Mary Maile on April 17th, 2024. Susan is survived by her husband of 60 years, John, three sons, Andrew (Laura), Nicholas (Claudine) and Stephen (Christine), as well as 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.
Susan was born in Brighton, England in 1937 to Marion and Alfred Pewtress. Her childhood experiences were greatly influenced by the war years in England including one short evacuation from Brighton when an invasion seemed imminent. Susan trained in London as a Registered Nurse at St. Bartholomew’s hospital where she made many lifelong friends. Susan met her future husband, John, while working in the Brighton Hospital and they were subsequently married in 1964. They emigrated to Vancouver, BC and eventually settled in Quesnel in 1965.
Moving to BC’s Cariboo region in the 1960’s was a big change for her, but Susan quickly adapted and met many fabulous people during her almost 60 years in Quesnel. There were happy memories of summer weekends at 10 Mile Lake when her children were young; and later, as her boys grew up, Susan turned her attention to training the family Beagle dogs. Susan was an avid gardener and always had many colorful flowers and a thriving vegetable plot.
Susan gave of her time generously and was a very active volunteer in many community organizations, including being a member of the GR Baker Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for over 50 years. She was also a key figure in starting the local “Meals on Wheels” program. Susan was recognized for her community service as Quesnel’s Citizen of the Year in 1991 and also received a BC Community Achievement award in 2009.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Auxiliary To The GR Baker Memorial Hospital in Quesnel.
