Obituary of Gary James Gassoff
It is with great sadness that the family of Gary Gassoff announces his passing after a courageous battle with Cancer surrounded by loved ones.
Gary was born in Quesnel to Albert and Denise Gassoff. He was one of 6 children that grew up on the family farm. When he wasn't helping at home, he was busy playing hockey with his brothers. He played years with the Quesnel Kangaroos and Junior hockey for the Vernon Vikings. Vernon is where he met the love of his life Janet. Gary and Janet married in 1979 and moved to Quesnel that same year. They finished their house and continued to put down roots.
A few years later Gary started farming along side his Mom and Dad. In 1987 they were blessed with their son Devin. Gary spent years teaching Devin the pride of working hard and his love of hockey. They would spend most vacations driving him around the province to tournaments and games. Gary became an electrician and worked for 43 years with Service Electric where he retired in 2022. Everyone who knew Gary knows part of his mind was always on the farm and taking care of his cows and horses.
He spent his retirement years on hunting trips with the family, notably at Bowron Lake each fall with Janet and family, and many adventures with Devin. He loved spending time on the water fishing with Janet, and would take his time BBQing after a day out on the lake. Albert says Gary was his right hand man, and you could usually find him having a coffee and catching up at the farm, with the rest of the family filtering in throughout the morning.
Gary will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years Janet, his son Devin (Christina) and two adoring grand-daughters Georgia and Abby. He'll be forever loved and missed by his father Albert, his sister Lynda, sister in-law Diana, brothers Ken (Lorraine), Brad (Trudy), Doug (Brenda) and countless aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and co-workers. On Janet's side he'll be survived by his sister-in-laws Sharon Johnson, and Darlene Kring. He will be reunited in heaven with his Mother Denise, his brother Robert "Bob", and in-law's Arthur and Ester Hanet. Gary will be remembered for his work ethic, his lifelong partnership with Janet, and being an amazing father and grandfather. We like to think he's free from pain riding his horses, reading a western, watching sports and playing a game or two of crib. He will be greatly missed.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Obanye, Dr. Tudhope, Dr. Mathews, the staff at GR Baker Hospital, all the nurses that treated him through his cancer care journey, and Dunrovin Hospice nurses and staff. Thank you to everyone who has sent food, flowers and well wishes. Gary loved his visits with everyone while in hospice. A celebration of life will be in Spring of 2025. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Dunrovin Hospice.
