Obituary of Frieda Karolat

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frieda Karolat, "Oma" on December 12, 2018 in Quesnel BC.

Her fiery spirit and gentle manner will forever be remembered by her four children Trudi Janischewski, Werner (Donna) Karolat, Linda (Woody) Shilling, Wilfred (Mary)Karolat. Her sister Elsie Zimmer, Erna (Karl Heinz) Bucher, Lily, Lydia Hanelt, Monika Rogoseh-Hanelt. Grandchildren Sonja Janischewski, Amanda (Jordan) Booth, Brent (Janelle) Janischewski, Jamie (Andrea) Karolat, Bryan (Nichole) Karolat,Tanya Shilling, Holly (Jason) Rand, and Michael(Quailla) Karolat. As well a multitude of great grandchildren Ava, Mackenzie, Rue, Hayden, Nova, Maxwell, Grady, Emma, Evelyn, Blake, Charlie, Jordan and Storm to carry on her trickery, creative skills, beautiful singing, and tasty cooking and baking.

Frieda was born November 27th, 1922 in Rovno, Poland to Ferdinand Hanelt and Amelie Woltman. They had a small farm and her father was the best blacksmith around. He built wonderful sleighs. She was one of four siblings, five half sisters, and four step siblings. During the war they all fled their home in Wolynia moving throughout Germany, Poland and Russia, losing her parents, and grandfather in the process. She landed in Germany and raised five of her siblings as they were her own. On May 8, 1951 Frieda and Trudi landed in Halifax and travelled to Lampman Saskatchewan. She met a curly haired man Herbert Karolat and was whisked away to Buckridge to start a life near Quesnel BC. Throughout her life she spent her days raising her children and helping to raise her grandchildren. She would often be seen working in her flower and vegetable garden. Bringing homegrown bouquets of flowers to different events and baked goods to every party. Her schnitzel and Torte were unrivaled. She was a regular fixture at the grandchildrens' sporting events. Frieda was a very proud and hardworking lady, lending a hand whether in the bush, on the farm, in the yard or in the kitchen.  She was also happy to supervise, telling you exactly how it should be done.  Relaxing in the evenings she would often watch hockey with the men in her family.

Those who wish to donate in memory of Frieda can gift to their favourite charity.
